CAD-CAM is an acronym for English words computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing (computer-aided design / computer-aided drawing up). CAD-CAM technology has already been used for decades in space technology, shipbuilding and automotive and aerospace industry.

CAD-CAM revolution in dentistry

In the early 80’s CAD-CAM is slowly introduced into dentistry to improve the accuracy and speed of the dental restorations (crowns, bridges, inlays). In the beginning the preparation was very challenging and not so fast, but now with 3D intraoral scanners and compact dental five Axis milling machines, the process is very reliable, fast and comfortable for both the technician and the patient.

CAD-CAM technologies help the dentist and technician to produce the most accurate prosthetic restorations (inlays, onlays, crowns, bridges) with a perfect anatomical shape, size and aesthetics. CAD-CAM technology is widely represented in prosthetics, but over time we see an increasing use of CAD-CAM technology in other fields of dental medicine.

This way of making prosthetic replacement is based on the preparation without or with minimal assistance of dental technicians to give a perfect precision, and the possibility of mistake is reduced to minimum. The advantage of CAD-CAM technologies is shortening the process of making restorations from two or more visits to just one. The material used in the CAD-CAM technology is zirconium. It replaces the metal, ie the metal structure (gold, titanium and other alloys) that were previously used under the porcelain. - My problems with my teeth have been going on since the 30's and even though I had regular visits to the dentist, with time, my gums were getting worse and I started isolating myself.
